We had dinner last night at Mazzi’s, a favorite Italian restaurant in town. While waiting, we saw a crowd of young runners on the Amazon Trail, unusual at that hour. Later the same runners from Newberg High School (near Portland) with adults (coaches) are seated at tables nearby. The boys with coach at one table, the girls and coaches (with one brave boy) at another. The gang races today at Lane Community College in the state finals. The girls are already champians. Invariably, runners and swimmers are the smartest student athletes.
